1. Working principle of marine spark plugs

The main function of the spark plug is to generate electric sparks in the engine combustion chamber, ignite the mixed gas (a mixture of fuel and air), thereby driving the piston to move and provide power for the ship.

Its working principle is as follows:

High-voltage current conduction: The ignition coil generates high-voltage current and transmits it through the center electrode of the spark plug.

Spark generation: The current crosses the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode to generate high-temperature electric sparks.

Ignite the mixed gas: The electric spark ignites the mixed gas in the cylinder, produces explosive combustion, and drives the piston to move.

Cyclic work: The spark plug repeats this process in each working cycle of the engine to ensure that the engine continues to run.

Marine spark plugs are usually made of corrosion-resistant and high-temperature resistant materials (such as platinum or iridium) to adapt to the high humidity and high salt conditions of the marine environment.

 

2. Product advantages of marine spark plugs

Compared with ordinary automobile spark plugs, marine spark plugs have unique advantages in design and materials to meet the special needs of ship engines:

 

  • Stronger corrosion resistance

The marine environment has high humidity and high salt content, and ordinary spark plugs are prone to oxidation and corrosion. Marine spark plugs use stainless steel shells or special coatings to effectively resist seawater and salt spray erosion.

 

  • Higher high temperature resistance

Spark plugs need to withstand higher temperatures when marine engines run at high loads for a long time. High-quality marine spark plugs use ceramic insulators and high-temperature resistant electrode materials (such as platinum and iridium) to ensure stable ignition.

 

  • Optimized electrode design

Marine spark plugs usually use thin electrodes or dual-electrode designs to improve ignition efficiency, reduce carbon deposits, and ensure that the engine can still run stably under low speed or high load conditions.

 

  • Longer service life

Due to the harsh marine environment, marine spark plugs need to have a longer life. High-end products use precious metal electrodes, which wear more slowly, extend the replacement cycle, and reduce maintenance costs.

 

  • Adapt to different fuel types

Marine engines may use gasoline, diesel or mixed fuels. High-quality spark plugs can adapt to different fuel characteristics to ensure efficient combustion.

 

3. Common problems and solutions for marine spark plugs

Although marine spark plugs are well designed, they may still encounter some problems in long-term use, affecting engine performance. The following are several common problems and solutions:

 

Carbon deposits on spark plugs

Problem manifestations: ignition difficulties, engine shaking, and power reduction.

Cause: Incomplete fuel combustion, or oil entering the combustion chamber.

Solution: Check and clean the spark plugs regularly, use high-quality fuel and lubricants, and replace the spark plugs when necessary.

Electrode ablation

Problem manifestations: engine acceleration is weak and fuel consumption increases.

Cause: The spark plug runs at high temperature for a long time, and the electrode is severely worn.

Solution: Replace spark plugs with better high-temperature resistance (such as iridium spark plugs) and check whether the ignition system voltage is too high.

Spark plug leakage

Problem manifestations: intermittent engine flameout and difficulty starting.

Cause: The insulator is damaged or damp, causing current leakage.

Solution: Replace the spark plug to ensure good sealing. Check whether the ignition coil and high-voltage wire are aging.

Abnormal spark plug gap

Problem manifestation: unstable ignition and engine knock.

Cause: The electrode gap changes due to long-term use.

Solution: Regularly check and adjust the spark plug gap to the standard value (usually 0.7-1.0mm), and use a special gap measurement tool for adjustment.

 

4. How to choose a suitable marine spark plug?

Matching engine model: Different ship engines have different requirements for the heat value and size of spark plugs, and the manufacturer's recommended model must be referred to.

Consider the use environment: If it is operated in a high temperature and high salt environment for a long time, a corrosion-resistant and high-temperature resistant model should be selected.

Regular maintenance: It is recommended to check the spark plug every 100-200 hours of operation and replace it if necessary.
