Industrial spark plugs are specialized spark plugs designed specifically for gas-powered industrial engines. Unlike spark plugs used in ordinary cars or motorcycles, industrial spark plugs must withstand more demanding operating environments, including higher temperatures, pressures, and extended operating times. Their function is to generate an electric spark under high pressure, igniting combustible gases (such as natural gas, biogas, and landfill gas) within the cylinder, driving the engine.

Features of Industrial Spark Plugs

Higher Durability: Industrial spark plugs are typically made of materials that are more heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant, such as iridium and platinum, to withstand the long-term, high-load operation of industrial engines.

Specialized Structural Design: Their structures are often optimized to suit the characteristics of different gas fuels. For example, some designs are better able to withstand the corrosion caused by sulfur compounds in biogas.

Higher Ignition Efficiency: Industrial spark plugs must ensure reliable ignition under various operating conditions to improve engine combustion efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Longer Service Life: Because industrial engines typically operate continuously and require higher maintenance, industrial spark plugs have a significantly longer service life than standard spark plugs, reducing the frequency of downtime for maintenance.

How to Extend the Service Life of Industrial Spark Plugs
1. Select the Correct Spark Plug
Matching the Engine Model: Ensure that the selected spark plug's model, thermal value, and size exactly match the engine manufacturer's recommendations. An inappropriate spark plug may result in incomplete combustion or engine overheating.

2. Proper Installation Procedures
Check and Adjust the Gap: Before installation, use a specialized spark plug gap gauge to check and adjust the spark plug electrode gap. Incorrect gaps can affect ignition performance and may cause premature electrode erosion.
Cleaning the Spark Plug Hole: Before installing a new spark plug, thoroughly clean the spark plug hole on the engine to ensure it is free of oil, dust, or carbon deposits.
Using a Torque Wrench: Tighten the spark plug according to the manufacturer's torque specifications using a torque wrench. Excessive torque can damage the spark plug and cylinder threads, while insufficient torque can result in a poor seal and impaired heat dissipation.

3. Routine Maintenance and Monitoring
Regular Inspection: Inspect spark plugs regularly as recommended in the engine maintenance manual. Check the electrodes for carbon deposits, burns, or abnormal color.
Analyzing Carbon Deposits: Observing the color and type of carbon deposits on the spark plug electrodes can diagnose engine operating conditions. For example, moist, black deposits may indicate an overly rich mixture or an oil leak, while grayish-white deposits may indicate an overly lean mixture or excessive ignition advance.
Maintaining Fuel and Oil Quality: Use fuel and oil that meet specifications. Unclean fuel or low-quality oil will cause incomplete combustion, resulting in more carbon deposits and shortening spark plug life.
Replacement Interval: Follow the manufacturer's recommended replacement interval. Even if the spark plug appears to be in good condition, it should be replaced when the replacement interval is reached to avoid performance degradation that affects engine efficiency.

Key Points for Cleaning Industrial Spark Plugs
1. Physical Cleaning
Using Specialized Tools: Use a copper brush or a specialized spark plug cleaning brush to gently remove carbon deposits from the electrodes and insulators. Be careful not to use overly hard metal tools, such as wire brushes, as this may scratch the electrode surface and affect ignition performance.
Avoid Excessive Pressure: When scrubbing, be gentle, especially when cleaning the insulators. Damaged insulators can cause spark plug failure.
Using a Small Blade: For stubborn carbon deposits, carefully scrape with a small blade. Always hold the blade at a slight angle to the electrode surface, avoiding direct vertical scraping.

2. Chemical Cleaning
Using a Specialized Cleaner: Specialized spark plug cleaners are commercially available. Spray them on the spark plug, let them sit for a few minutes, and then scrub with a brush. These cleaners effectively soften and dissolve carbon deposits.
Soaking in Kerosene or Gasoline: If you don't have a specialized cleaner, soak the spark plug in kerosene or gasoline for a period of time. This method effectively softens oily carbon deposits. After soaking, physically clean the spark plug with a brush.

3. Drying and Installation
Drying Thoroughly: After cleaning, ensure the spark plug is completely dry. You can use compressed air to dry it or wipe it with a clean cloth. Any residual moisture or solvent may affect ignition and even cause engine failure.
Checking the Electrode Gap: Before reinstalling, always use a spark plug gap gauge to check and adjust the electrode gap. This is critical to ensuring proper spark plug operation.

Precautions
Avoid Overcleaning: Frequent or improper cleaning will accelerate spark plug wear. It is recommended to clean the spark plug at the appropriate intervals according to the engine maintenance manual.
Observe the Color of Carbon Deposits: Before cleaning, observe the color of the spark plug. This can help you diagnose any engine problems. For example, black, oily carbon deposits may indicate that oil has entered the combustion chamber.
Determine if Replacement is Necessary: ​​If the spark plug electrode is severely burned, the insulator is cracked, or if performance remains poor after cleaning, it is time to replace the spark plug.
